Ford will spend $900 million and add 900 employees to boost electric vehicle (EV) and autonomous vehicle (AV) production at its Flat Rock, Michigan, plant. You know what they say...good news comes in 900s.

Flat Rock is where Ford makes the Mustang...and the occasional backtrack.

  • Ford, circa January 2017: We’re building EVs and AVs at Flat Rock.
  • December 2017: To make room at Flat Rock for more AV development, we’re shifting electric SUV production to Mexico.
  • Tuesday: Never mind—the EV is back and we’re all-in on Flat Rock.

Ford has sunk billions into getting AVs road-ready by 2021, but by all appearances, it's more bullish on its $11 billion bet to bring 40 EV models to market by 2022.

  • Big picture: Legacy carmakers have struggled with AV tech, but EV development has come much easier. And getting EVs right is key for Ford, which made its name in the era of the internal combustion engine (c.1872—).

+ The news garnered praise from both the United Auto Workers union and President Trump.

Dark mode for life.
