Yesterday, Stanford University launched the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, which “is not the first such academic effort of its kind, but it is by far the most ambitious,” per the WaPo.

Stanford University’s Stanford Institute confirms two things: First, Stanford doesn’t want you to forget its name. Second, Stanford wants to lead the way in AI innovation.

  • The center, which has a stacked advisory council, aims to raise over $1 billion to buy computing power and hire AI’s brightest minds.

Co-directors Fei-Fei Li and John Etchemendy are put off by how AI’s development went askew as it graduated from academia to the corporate world. While most of us settle down with our knitting clubs and a golden retriever after college, AI went wild.

Zoom out, c/o WaPo: “As Silicon Valley faces a reckoning over how technology is changing society, Stanford wants to be at the forefront of a different type of innovation, one that puts humans and ethics at the center of the booming field of AI.”
