…Psych. He said in a podcast this week that Tesla’s full self-driving feature will be ready by the end of the year. And by the end of 2020, Musk said, drivers will be able to power nap in the back seat of their Tesla from Bel Air to Hawthorne.

You sure? “I am certain of that. That is not a question mark.”

Status check: At present, some Teslas have an autopilot mode that works from on-ramp to off-ramp on the highway. Plus, the company said in October 2016 that all subsequent Teslas have the necessary self-driving hardware—Tesla just needs to crack the software part.

The rest of the industry is watering down expectations…in November, Waymo CEO John Krafcik said the tech is “really, really hard” and decades from ubiquity. Musk seems unfazed.

Our bet: Musk has over-promised before, so take these comments with a grain of salt. But if his forecast is right, Tesla is miles ahead of its competition.
